After the last bull is bucked, the chutes come down, and all the fun of rodeo week is over, your
Cherokee Rodeo committee starts the hard work of planning their annual fundraising event that
supports their Leaders in Ag scholarship. As a non-profit, the committee has a goal of giving
back to your rural communities by providing scholarships to local youth. After another
successful fundraiser back in February, the committee is excited to offer another $10,000
scholarship to an outstanding student from the area.
The scholarship committee reviewed applications from over 30 outstanding local high school
seniors and college students again this year. The scholarship committee narrowed this pool
down to the top four to interview. All four candidates impressed the committee but one stood out
from the rest. This young man grew up on a farm before heading off to South Dakota State
University to earn his bachelor’s degree. He just finished his 2nd year of veterinary school at
Iowa State University. Upon graduating he plans to return to northwest Iowa to serve his fellow
livestock producers and continue to help on his family farm. He has spent the week working
hard helping the committee get ready for the rodeo, just proving how much of a leader he is.
Here on behalf of the Cherokee Rodeo scholarship committee are members Michelle Anderson,
Zane Young and Shari Yungbluth. They are proud to present to you their 2nd ever $10,000
Leaders in Ag scholarship recipient, Ben Hargens.
